Apple may have manipulated images in Samsung case

The Galaxy S was resized to match the iPhone 3G, according to an investigation by the Dutch sister site of Computerworld, Webwereld.nl.

It appears Apple may be hiring Photoshop artists alongside lawyers for its legal battle with Samsung Electronics.

Webwereld.nl, the Dutch sister site of Computerworld, claims that Apple is using an image of the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone resized to more closely resemble the iPhone 3G. This follows similar claims that Apple had doctored images of the Galaxy Tab to look more like the iPad.

The reportedly altered images--which were presented as evidence in court--would place Apple on shaky ground. The company's primary argument is that Samsung's products are "slavish" imitations of Apple's hit mobile devices. But the need to adjust images of Samsung's products would call into question just how similar they are.

Apple presented Galaxy S images to a district court in The Hague. Apple wasn't immediately available to respond to CNET about the report. Samsung similarly wasn't available for comment.

There are clear differences in the size of the two phones. The dimensions of the Galaxy S are 122.4x64.2 millimeters, while the iPhone 3G measures 115.5x62.1 millimeters.

The dispute between Apple and Samsung has emerged as one of the more vicious and bitter fights among the myriad of patent battles going on around the world.

Apple has been embroiled in legal battles with Samsung, alleging that Samsung has copied Apple's user interface and design in its mobile devices. In particular, Apple is targeting the Galaxy smartphones and the Galaxy Tab, Samsung's Android tablet. The companies had seemingly come to an amiable agreement to temporarily halt sales of the Galaxy Tab in Australia, but Apple has moved aggressively to ban the product in Europe.

Apple and Samsung have separate cases filed in Germany. A recent ruling there had temporarily imposed a ban on sales of the Galaxy Tab throughout the European Union, but the ban was lifted when it was determined that the court didn't have jurisdiction outside of the country.

Samsung has been one of the more recent success stores in the smartphone world. Late to the game in adopting Android, it has more than made up for lost time with its hit Samsung Galaxy S smartphone line. Last month, Samsung said it shipped 5 million units of the sequel Galaxy S II phone in the first 85 days. Variants of the Galaxy S II are expected to hit the U.S. in the coming months.

[GAME][FREE] Retro-style platformer "Bloo Kid" released for Android

Hi Guys,

I would like to announce the release of my new Android game called "Bloo Kid".

It is a "one-screen" (like Bubble Bobble) jump and run game featuring cute pixelart, a full chiptune soundtrack und 60 levels across five unique worlds with five bossmonsters to defeat.

You control your character with on-screen buttons. The game gets quite challenging, especially if you want to complete all levels with a 3-star rating.Unfortunately, I don't have a trailer video yet, so the screens must suffice for now. The game is free. It shows some advertising, but not during normal gameplay, just in the menus.

I would be glad to hear some opinions on the game!

Here's the link in the market

Or just search "Bloo Kid" in the market

How To Jailbreak iPad 1 Using Redsn0w For iOS 4.3.5 [Windows / Mac]

Apple released iOS 4.3.5 earlier in the week to fix the security vulnerability with certification validation.

iPhone Dev team released Redsn0w, which allows iPad 1 users to jailbreak iOS 4.3.4 and it also works for iOS 4.3.5 (tethered).

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPad on iOS 4.3.5 using Redsn0w.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

This guide is meant for iPad 1 users only. This guide is not meant for iPhone. iPod Touch users can checkout this step-by-step guide, while iPhone users can checkout this step-by-step guide.

Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 only supports a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot.

Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Please do not forget to backup your iPad before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPad.

If you've jailbroken your iPhone then you can use jailbreak apps such as AptBackup, PkgBackup or xBackup from Cydia to take a backup of all the jailbreak apps and tweaks so you can reinstall them easily after successfully jailbreaking your iPhone rather then installing them individually.

After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPad secure.

Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes i.e. iTunes 10.2 or later.

Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 doesn't support iPad 2.

If you are on iOS 4.3.3 then you can use JailbreakMe 3.0, which is one of the easiest tools to jailbreak iPad, which supports a untethered jailbreak. You can checkout this post for instructions.

You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPad 1:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 (Mac and Windows) and save the application in a folder named "Redsn0w" on your desktop.

Step 2: You need to download both the iOS 4.3.4 and iOS 4.3.5 firmware files (use Firefox or Chrome to download the firmware file instead of using Internet Explorer or Safari):

iOS 4.3.4 firmware file for iPad 1 (iPad1,1_4.3.4_8K2_Restore.ipsw)

iOS 4.3.5 firmware file for iPad 1 (iPad1,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw)

Step 3: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder.

Step 4: Connect your iPad to the computer, which should automatically launch iTunes.

Skip steps 5 and 6, if your iPad has already been upgraded to iOS 4.3.5.

Step 5: From the 'Devices' section on the left pane of iTunes, select your iPad device. Now, hold down the Shift button (Option button for Mac users) and click the 'Restore' button.

Step 6: Navigate to the Redsn0w folder on the desktop and select the downloaded iOS 4.3.5 firmware file (iPad1,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw). Click on the 'Choose' button to let iTunes update your iPhone with the required firmware. You will be asked to setup your iPad 1 either from a previous backup or setup as a new iPad, select the backup you want for your device (ideally should be the most recent one). Wait for iTunes to finish.

Step 7: Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application. Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select 'Run as an Administrator').

Step 8: You will be asked to select the corresponding IPSW file. Click on the Browse button and select the iOS 4.3.4 firmware file (iPad1,1_4.3.4_8K2_Restore.ipsw). Note: iOS 4.3.4 firmware file and not the iOS 4.3.5 firmware file.

Step 9: Redsn0w will verify the firmware file and inform you if it has successfully identified it. Click on 'Next' to proceed.

Step 10: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 11: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options you would like. Make sure Cydia is selected and select 'Next' to continue.

Step 12: You will now be prompted to switch OFF your iPad and plug it to the computer. Follow the instructions and click on 'Next' to move to the next screen:

Step 13: You will now need to put your iPad into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on iPad down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the iPad and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w identifies the device:

Step 14: Your iPad should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 15: Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 16: You will now be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the 'Finish' button to exit the application.

Step 17: Your iPad will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). After it has rebooted, your iPad should be successfully jailbroken. You should find Cydia jailbreak app on your iPad’s home screen.

If you're new to the jailbreaking world and wondering what to do after jailbreaking your iPad, checkout our jailbreak apps category page to find out the apps you can install on your iPad using the Cydia app.

Note: Once Redsn0w has finished jailbreaking your iPad, you will need to boot it tethered. All you need to do is rerun Redsn0w and this time select Just boot tethered right now from the list of options instead of installing Cydia.

Hope this helped. Please don't forget to let us know how it goes in the comments.

iPhone Users In Korea File $25 Million Class-Action Lawsuit Against Apple For Location Tracking Issue

Back in May Apple had released iOS 4.3.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and iOS 4.2.8 for Verizon iPhone to fix the iPhone and iPad 3G location tracking bug, which had raised a lot of controversy.

It all started when Security Researcher Alasdair Allan at the University of Exeter revealed that iPhone and iPad 3G regularly tracks your iOS device and records the co-ordinates along with timestamp in a hidden file.

The controversy landed Apple into trouble as they were investigated by privacy regulators in South Korea, France, Italy and Germany.

At that time, Apple clarified that it is not tracking the location of the iPhone or iPad 3G as reported by security researchers. Apple also confirmed that it had never done so and had no plans to ever do so. But Apple admitted that it could do a better job managing the crowd-sourced location database and released iOS software update 4.3.3 to fix the location tracking bugs.

But Apple was still fined by Korea Communications Commission. It looks like the issue isn't closed as Bloomberg reports that approximately 27,000 iPhone users in South Korea have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, seeking a compensation of one million won ($930) each. Bloomberg reports:

A group of South Korean users of Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone sued the company in a local court, claiming it invaded their privacy by allowing the smartphone to collect location data without their consent.

About 27,000 people joined a class-action suit against Apple’s South Korean unit and headquarters, seeking 1 million won per person ($930) in damages, according to a notice posted online by Mirae Law, which represents the plaintiffs. The suit was filed in Changwon, south of Seoul, where the law firm is located.

Do you think this is blown out of proportion? Please share your views in the comments section below. [via Bloomberg]

Apple currently plans to start pre-orders for next iPhone on Sept. 30, launch Oct. 7

We’ve independently heard that Apple has plans to begin selling the next-generation iPhone on Friday, October 7th; the date first reported by TiPB. According to our sources, Apple has been weighing between launching the new iPhone on October 7th or October 14th, but with the product’s latest stages of pre-mass-production currently moving along nicely, Apple is presently shooting towards a launch on the 7th. On top of this, unlike with the iPad 2, Apple plans to offer pre-orders for the new iPhone.

Apple currently plans to begin pre-orders for their next-generation smartphone in the final days of September. The company has still not finalized the pre-order start date, but is debating between Thursday, September 29th and Friday, September 30th. The 30th seems more likely at this point according to one of our sources.

Pre-orders for the new iPhone starting in late September will also mean that Apple’s fall event will take place in September; which would seem to counter NewsCorp’s Kara Swisher’s combative insistence of an October iPhone 5 event. Additionally, the first week of October date for the new iPhone’s availability, fits nicely with our report about AT&T’s major early October changes: data throttling and a new insurance plan for $199 devices. This release date would also jive with John Paczkowski’s report about the iPhone 5 becoming available in October.

Apple is rumored to be producing two new iPhones for a fall debut; one as an upgrade to the iPhone 4 and one as a cheaper, possibly prepaid, addition to the Apple smartphone lineup. The ‘iPhone 5′, at least, will likely feature Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, an eight megapixel camera, and iOS 5. In addition, the new flagship phone is expected to feature new software such as a powerful voice-based navigation system and other goodies like panorama photography capabilities.

(note the elongated gesture home button)

There has been mixed chatter about the device’s exterior design, with cases, which we first revealed, pointing to a thinner form factor. Others, though, have said the design will be largely similar to the current iPhone 4. As with any launch date report, we have to note that Apple is constantly shifting their launch plans. As we noted earlier, the launch date was already moved up a week in the company’s recent launch planning. We are reasonably confident, though, that as of today, Apple is planning to unleash their next iPhone on October 7th and offer pre-orders starting on September 29th or 30th. The date could and likely will change again, but we feel it is necessary to report the company’s current plan.

How To Fix iPhone Or iPad Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues After Upgrading To iOS 4.3.3

According to ReadWriteWeb, iPhone and iPad users are reporting Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading iOS 4.3.3 that was released by Apple last week to fix the location tracking bug.

As RWW points out, when iPad 1 was launched last year, users had reported similar Wi-Fi connectivity issues but this time it looks like it is also affecting iPhone users.

Sarah Perez of RWW explains the issue she faced after upgrading to the latest iOS software update:

After updating my iPad to iOS version 4.3.3, I discovered this problem had again resurfaced, but it was even worse than before. My connection wouldn't just drop after the iPad went to sleep, as it had in the past, it would lose the connection when I was actively using the device, even while surfing the Web.

She reports that users are reporting the following Wi-FI connectivity issues on Apple’s discussion forum:

iPhone 4 says it connects to the Wi-Fi network, but the Wi-Fi icon never appears

Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on its own

Can no longer use Wi-Fi at all unless within close proximity to the router

Can't connect to Wi-Fi at all on device running 4.3.3, but devices running 4.3.1 have no trouble on same network

Wi-Fi won't work, and resetting network settings doesn't fix

Wi-Fi shows signal, but device can't connect to the Internet

If you’re facing any of these issues, you can follow these tips to see if one of them resolves the issue until Apple releases an iOS software update to fix the issue:

Basic Troubleshooting:

Launch Settings app

Tap Wi-Fi

Turn Wi-Fi toggle off and then on again

If this doesn't work then try to renew IP address, which may be required if you are using a larger wireless network.

Renew IP Address:

Launch Settings app

Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

Scroll down and tap on the Renew Lease button

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try establishing a fresh connection with the Wi-Fi network by using the Forget This Network option. Please note that this will clear your current Wi-Fi network settings, including saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Forget This Network:

Launch Settings app

Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

Tap on the Forget This Network button

You will be prompted with a message that your iOS device will stop automatically joining this network. Tap on the Forget button.

Go back to the list of Wi-Fi networks, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

If this doesn’t help try restarting your iOS device.

Restart iOS Device:

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until "slide to power off" slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iOS device will turn off after a few moments.

Turn iOS device on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If restarting your iOS device doesn’t resolve the problem then reset all network settings. Please note that this will clear your current cellular and Wi-Fi network settings, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings.

Reset Network Settings:

Launch Settings app

Tap General

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on Reset

Tap Reset Network Settings

When the device restarts, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

Please let us know if you’re facing any Wi-Fi connectivity issue after upgrading to iOS 4.3.3 and if any of the tips mentioned above helped in resolving the issue.
