Have we found the iPhone 5?

Last evening, a tipster sent us some pictures of what he now thinks is the iPhone 5.  He caught what he said was likely an Apple employee hunched over the device on the way home from work in San Francisco earlier this week.  He told us he was able to get a very good look at the device but the pictures he snapped “didn’t do it justice”.
We contacted the tipster by phone and checked his background.  We believe he saw a totally new Apple device, probably a prototype iPhone 5.  He contacted us because when he got home, he doubted what he saw was legitimate until he looked at the green cases we posted.  Then it all came together for him.  Our tipster has had an iPhone 3GS and currently has an iPhone 4.  He knows his iPhones and iPods and this was like nothing he’s ever seen.  He said it would fit perfectly into the case below.

“Almost EVO-like” in screen size, this iPhone also appears thinner than the current iPhone 4 but also wider.  The edges are rounded metal like the edges of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but could still function as an antenna.  The back is a curved/tapered glass or plastic.  He couldn’t tell but if he had to guess he’d say glass.  He said it looked too amazing to be built by anyone besides Apple (fanboy!).
Our tipster wasn’t able to see the front/home button and the man holding the device was covering the Apple logo for all but a brief moment when the above picture was snapped.  It seemed apparent that he was trying to hide what he had more than the average smartphone user.
We aren’t certain if this is legitimate or not but it is too thin and flat to be an iPhone 3GS and too rounded to be an iPhone 4.  The black back with Apple logo would seem to rule out an iPod touch.  Our tipster is all but certain it was a new Apple product and the iPhone 5 would be the most likely scenario.
Would Apple let employees out into the world with these over a month before launch?  Apple has acknowledged that they real world test this way in the past (ahem, Gray Powell).  They’ve also indicated that the cases the iPhone 4s came in may have been a factor in not diagnosing the finger spot/antennagate fiasco ahead of time.  So perhaps this is legit?

iPhone 5 shows up in Korean carrier KT’s system, 16GB and 32GB capacities?

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is about a month away from reality and carriers around the globe have begun taking steps towards the device’s launch. We heard a few weeks ago that the fifth-generation iPhone has appeared in carrier databases at couple of high-profile European iPhone carriers, and today we are hearing this once again: from Korea. We cannot absolutely confirm that the new device is in the KT (Korea Telecom) system, but it sounds and looks likely. We also heard it from two independent sources.

As you can see in the image above, the SKUs are being referred to internally as AIP5, which obviously stands for Apple iPhone 5. This is a level up from the iPhone 4′s SKU name: AIP4. The interesting part here is that both SKUs are attached to 16 GB and 32 GB capacities. These SKU capacities might be just place holders, so don’t lose hope for a 64 GB iPhone. You will see a third option in the screenshot above, 00, but this means the device is for unlocked iPhone users; not a third iPhone 5 model.

Thanks, Mr. R!

The transparent battery: Is an invisible iPhone next?

Screen Shot 2011-07-27 at 3.40.55 PM
In the category of people making things you didn't know you need, researchers at Stanford University have just created a thin, flexible, totally transparent lithium-ion battery. It is about the size and shape of a Listerine breath mint strip, and as clear as Saran Wrap.
According to an article on the university' website, researchers were inspired to make a see-through battery partially because they want transparent Apple products to be a reality in the future.
"I want to talk to Steve Jobs about this. I want a transparent iPhone!" said Yi Cui, battery expert extraordinaire and an associate professor of materials science at Stanford who worked on the project.
Cui created the battery with graduate student Yuan Yang, who is the first author of the paper "Transparent Lithium-ion Batteries," published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
The challenge of making a battery see-through is that certain key materials that make a battery work are fundamentally not transparent, and no good transparent substitutes could be found. The Stanford scientists found a way around the hurdle by making the non-transparent parts of the battery so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Here's how the Stanford story explains it:
"If something is smaller than 50 microns, your eyes will feel like it is transparent," said Yang, because the maximum resolving power of the human eye is somewhere between 50 to 100 microns."
Yang and Cui devised a mesh-like framework for the battery electrodes, with each "line" in the grid being approximately 35 microns wide. Light passes through the transparent gaps between the gridlines; because the individual lines are so thin, the entire meshwork area appears transparent.
The battery is not strong enough to power a laptop yet, but it could power a camera. And Ciu is optimistic that it won't be long before the battery gets stronger.
If you want to geek out, you can read more about the crazy science that went into this battery here.

Nokia N9 nine second adverts leave us briefly wanting MeeGo [Video]

Nokia has released a series of new videos squeezing adverts for the N9 into a mere nine seconds, pushing the idea of the MeeGo handset being particularly convenient and easy to use. The six clips – which you can see after the cut – give a very brief view of Swype, browsing, social media, maps, the camera, and the N9′s “all-screen design.”

According to Nokia, the ad team decided a regular 30 second slot would be “far too slow-moving,” hence these somewhat frenetic clips. Whether you would learn enough about the handset from them to actually leave you wanting to buy it – if you hadn’t heard of the N9 beforehand – is arguable, though.
Nokia’s message has been somewhat mixed in its launch of the N9, with the handset announced with great excitement and then quickly followed up by the first “accidental leak” of one of the company’s Windows Phone devices. It was widely suggested that Nokia leaked the Mango handset – which closely resembles the design of the N9 – purposefully, so as to diffuse complaints that the company should have stuck with MeeGo rather than look to Microsoft’s OS.
If we were of the cynical persuasion, we might wonder whether a phone – and platform – so easily made lustworthy in just nine seconds could suggest that there’s a whole lot more potential to MeeGo than Nokia is currently taking advantage of. You can find more on the N9 in our hands-on report, with some longer, slightly more comprehensive video demos.

Nokia commits to N9 support; “several” updates in pipeline

Nokia has confirmed it plans to support the MeeGo-based N9 “for years” and that the company’s software engineers have “several SW updates” planned for the niche handset. Nokia head of portfolio management, Klas Ström, took to Twitter to assuage concerns over the N9′s longevity, with would-be buyers seemingly keen to pick up the smartphone but wary of Nokia’s change of allegiance to Windows Phone.

Whether those reassurances will be sufficient to make the N9 a sales success remain to be seen, though there are signs that Nokia itself has only moderate ambitions for the MeeGo phone. Previous leaks have tipped small-scale production and modest sales projections – something Nokia itself has declined to comment on, naturally – with the primary focus remaining on Windows Phone 7.1 Mango.
Nokia has said that it sees MeeGo development as a test-bed for future disruptive mobile technologies, though it’s unclear exactly how many of those will find their way out to the N9 and any other devices running the OS that Nokia releases. The company is yet to commit to a specific launch date for the N9; check out our hands-on report here.

Nokia N9 photos look REALLY good

I am not a Nokia fan at all. The only Nokia device I have ever owned was a free phone a carrier gave me years, and years ago with one of my first wireless plans. I am still seeing little that would talk me out of my iPhone or an Android device for a Nokia today. What I will say is Nokia knows how to make a camera phone. The camera on my iPhone sucks to the point that I only use it in a pinch and then the photos are just not very high quality.

Nokia has been talking a lot about the camera module that its new N9 smartphone uses over the last few months. A week or so back we talked about Nokia boasting that the camera on the N9 was the fastest around and that it supported NFC image transfers. The key factoid in that claim if fastest camera is that the N9 cam can be on and ready to use in 2.9 seconds. The next closest was the iPhone 4 at about three seconds.
With all the talk about how fast and high quality the camera is the thing that I and a bunch of you really want to know is how the photos look. Nokia has posted up a complete gallery of photos taken by the N9. The photos are not edited or adjusted at all according to Nokia and are just as they came from the camera. The pics look really good. One thing that I really want to know I don’t see a photo to represent is how fast the shutter is. I can’t take a pic of my kids with the iPhone if they are moving because it won’t snap the photo before they are out of the frame. Check out a few of the gallery pics below, which I did resize for our website. The originals can be seen at the source link.

Samsung Galaxy 3D Smartphone Possible for Q4 2011

According to Korean News Site ETNews speaking with sources in the field, Samsung may be planning a 3D device not unlike what’s been revealed by LG in the Optimus 3D and by HTC in the EVO 3D. Both comparative devices feature a glasses-free 3D display, two cameras on the back side of the device for 3D photography, and a dual-core processor to handle the graphics. The details on this new Samsung device are sparse, but it is said to be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the most advanced version of Android for handsets, for starters.

The “Samsung Galaxy 3D” as it might be called will feature a glasses-free 3D display run on a Samsung in=house developed 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor. The display will be a 4.3-inch 3D LCD of an unknown type, will very possibly be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich before its release due to the lateness in the year and the possibility that Ice Cream Sandwich will be out well before the device, and a unique ability will supposedly be present here in this device: the ability to output 3D content through HDMI to 3D capable televisions.
This would be a giant breakthrough if indeed it does come to fruition as thus far the ability to share 3D media is limited to the devices mentioned earlier in this article and translations to online sources such as YouTube 3D. Having born witness to a Texas Instruments keynote during Mobile World Congress 2011 about the viability of a 3D media sharing modern social world, the prospect of additional innovation being brought in by Samsung is quite exciting to me.
I’ve gotten a good look at the Optimus 3D as well as the HTC EVO 3D, and barring the headaches one might get from them after prolonged use, they’re certainly boats floating to a strange new future. This strange new future is one I’m glad to be a part of! That is, as soon as I get a new bottle of Ibuprofen.

Downgrade iOS 4.1 Beta to iOS 4 for iPhone 4, 3GS

How to downgrade from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G from iOS 4.1 beta to iOS 4.0? this is the common question i am getting from iHackintosh readers. As you know Apple seeded iOS 4.1 beta for developers and it’s already leaked in the wild. So many people updated to beta build and now want to go back to iOS 4.0 lower for whatever reason, Following is the step by step guide for iPhone4, iPhone 3GS and 3G running on iOS 4.1 beta release.
Note : iOS 4.1 is still in beta and you needn’t to edit your host files for iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 to bypass Apple signatures.
Instructions to Downgrade iOS 4.1 Beta
Step 1: Download and place iOS 4 on your desktop, now put your iPhone in DFU mode with following instructions.
  • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  • Turn iPhone off.
  • Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
  • Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
  • A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
  • If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.
Step 2: Once your iPhone is in DFU mode following message will be appeared in iTunes.restore
Click on “OK” , Now hold Option key (Mac) and Shift Key (Windows) while clicking Restore in iTunes and browse the iOS 4 firmware for your iPhone. Now the restore process will take 10 – 15 minutes.
Step 3: After restore process if you encountered an error message like 1011, 1013, 1015, just ignore them(Actually the firmware is already successfully installed). To exit recovery mode download Recboot, once you finishes your download launch Recboot app and hit the “exit recovery mode” button.
RecBoot
But if you encountered with error message like 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.

APK Edit v0.4, allows you to edit your apk file

APK Edit v0.4e
---------------------------------------------------------

Ever wanted to simply change an icon on your Android phone and found yourself lost in the endless lists of forum posts saying: you have to change heaven and earth to do this...
NOT ANYMORE!!!!

APK Edit is born!
(BTW, APK Edit has a child on its own now... I called him: File To Barcode)
If you like it, celebrate with me

With this little program you can simply change icons of your android application.
It even lets you change the applications name.
But wait mike..... there's more.....
It even lets you edit the text used in applications.

Sounds to good to be true...
Well... to be honest.... it is.
But I've come a long way from that initial question to the final answer.
My conclusion so far, it works for most of my applications.
It probably will work on most of yours as well.

Try it out now!

(Caution: when overwriting an existing application you will loose your associated data!!!)

Special thanks goes out to:
Brut.all for creating Apktool, the backbone of this little project.

Requirements:
Java & .Net Framework 3.5 (Why build on one platform if you can build on two? I know, I know....)
For installing system apps - S-OFF

Nice to know:
Clicking on the [Icons:] tag in the General tab will open a browser window and search for icons in "Google images".
Donations will be "forwarded" to fellow developers like Brutt.all and others, reinforcing the greatness of today's world.

How the magic works:
When opening an APK file it first tries to decompile it using APK Tool (with the version selected in the settings tab)
If decompile failed, because of a missing framework file, it tries to find this file on your phone.
Most of the times it will find what its looking for, pull it off your phone and tries to recompile the whole thing again.
If somehow it cannot find the required framework file, it will provide you a list of possible files on your phone. You can then choose the correct file yourself.
Assuming this process finishes without any problem you now can edit the apk file.
When you press Apply it will recompile the apk and then sign the newly compiled file.
- System APK files (APK files that needed an additional framework file) will get a copy of the original signature.
- Other APK files will get a brand new signature.
When you Click the phone animation it will push the APK to your phone
- System APK files will be pushed to /system/app (ADB PUSH)
- Other APK files will be installed the normal way (ADB INSTALL)
If install failed due to some signature failure it will do some additional fancy tricks and try it again.

Upcoming features:
New option in settings tab -> Only allow one instance of APK Edit to open at once.
New option in settings tab -> Add/remove APK file association to registry.
New option on startup -> Option to open up a "Phone Explorer", lets you edit APK files directly from phone.

[SCRIPT] The Best RAM Optimization

MORE SMOOTHNESS, MORE SPEED, LESS LAGS
AND
ENOUGH FREE MEMORY

Requirements: Root, Kernel which supports init.d

Hi guys,
after long time of testing I found the best balance for RAM, this script will make your RAM in the best optimization, the best optimization means the best balance between free memory, multitask, speed of launching apps and system speed. It means that you'll still have enough free memory (you'll have free memory as much as you need, because it is not good if you have really a lot of free memory, because Android's work with memory is different from other OS) and you can fully use your multitask, my script doesn't kill your app automatically when you minimize it. Your system and switching between apps or launching apps will be very fast.

Now you don't have to use Task Killer!

CHANGES

Lowmemorykiller values
-Values which mainly affect your multitask and free memory. Values of my script were made for combination of using multitask and still have enough free memory.

VM values
-Very important values which affect your battery consumption, system speed and speed of launching apps.

Here is the script:
Code:

INSTALLATION

1. Method for creating

1) Make file and add this code to it, if you make this script on Windows, set EOL to UNIX, then save file and name it for example "S97ramscript", if you have in your init.d other file with "S97" in name so use "S98" or "S96", etc., the name of file must be without extension

2) Then put your file to /system/etc/init.d with Root Explorer and set perm to 777 (rwxrwxrwx), if you have in your init.d other script for RAM management for example Darky's rambooster, so delete it

3) Reboot your phone

2. Method for creating

1) Download attached file (Juwe_RAM_Script.zip) unzip it and put it to /system/etc/init.d with Root Explorer and set perm to 777 (rwxrwxrwx), if you have in your init.d other script for RAM management for example Darky's rambooster, so delete it

2) Reboot your phone

3. Method for creating

1) Download attached file (Juwe_RAM_Script-CWM.zip) and install it with CWM

HOW TO CHECK IF SCRIPT WORKS

Download app Galaxy Tuner or AutoKiller Memory Optimizer and check values:
LMK values
10MB, 16MB, 24MB, 48MB, 56MB, 72MB
VM values
50, 10, 5, 10, 90, 5

ROM devs can use my script in their ROMs, but give the proper credit.

How to Install iOS 5 Beta Without UDID Registered or Developer Account

Apple pushed iOS 5 beta to developers on Junes 6th which requires a developer account or device’s UDID registered in a developer account to install iOS 5 beta on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Apple TV 2G. Thanks to a Gizmodo reader, who has found a way to install iOS 5 beta without UDID registered or a developer account.

These are the simple instructions to install iOS 5 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, iPad 2, iPad and Apple TV 2G without a developer account or UDID registered:
ATTENTION: We have not tested this method, and we discourage iOS firmware piracy (Go get a developers account if you wanna test beta). You cannot downgrade (iPhone 4, 3GS, and iPad CDMA/GSM) to iOS 4.3.3 once you upgrade to iOS 5 even if you have SHSH blobs saved. Beta expires once as new beta is out, means you’ll be stuck. These instructions are posted for information and educational purposes only. Proceed at your own risk.
*** These instructions will only bypass activation but will not activate cellular service. You can still use them to preview the operating system but without the ability to make calls, it’s far less useful. Not a problem for iPod Touch users.
  1. Download iOS 5 beta and install it on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch using iTunes (Shift/Alt + Restore).
  2. On activation screen, triple click the home button. This will activate the Voice Over.
  3. Triple click the home button and Emergency Call will appear.
  4. Click on Emergency Call and, while it’s switching, swipe-down with your three fingers. The Notification Center will appear!
  5. Click on the Weather widget. The Weather app will load.
  6. Click on the home button to exit to the iPhone’s springboard.
That’s it. Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is activated and fully operative.
Thank Mert Erdir for this clever link. He has this words to say:
My will is not to do something harmful to anyone, I just wanted to get the attention of Apple, the company I’m in love with; and maybe one day have a chance to talk to/meet Steve Jobs himself. You can reach me on Twitter for further questions.
I found this because I don’t have much cash to get an IOS Developer account, so donations for a young developer will be appreciated. They can be made on my blog (not in english). You’ll see the PayPal donate button on the right. Thanks!

iOS 5 Beta 4 Enables WiFi Sync for Windows

Apple has enabled Wi-Fi Sync for Windows users in iOS 5 beta 4. Indeed a great news for those iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users that use a Windows computer as their primary machine. For Mac users, WiFi Sync has already been enabled since iOS 5 Beta 2.
wifi sync windows
In iOS 5 beta 4, wireless syncing is now available on Windows as well as the Mac (requires OS X 10.6.8 or Lion)You will see an option to enable wireless syncing when you connect your device to iTunes with the USB cable. It is recommended you perform your initial sync with a cable after restoring your device.
Wi-Fi Sync in iOS 5 lets you sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with iTunes wirelessly over your local network.
  • Wireless syncing is triggered automatically when the device is connected to power and on the same network as the paired computer. Or, you can manually trigger a sync from iTunes or from Settings -> General -> iTunes Sync (same network as paired computer required).
  • If you find issues with apps, media and/or photos synced to your device, you can reset then resync. From Settings -> General -> Reset, choose Erase all Content and Settings. Then reconnect to iTunes and sync again.
If you’ve already got the iOS 5 beta 4 running on your iPhone, ipad or iPod Touch and use Windows OS on your primary computer, let us know how the WiFi Sync feature works for you.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.8b4 – Jailbreak iOS 5 beta 4

Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.8b4 to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 4 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 and iPod Touch 4G, 3G. You can download RedSn0w 0.9.8b4 from the link below…

redsn0w 0.9.8b4
Dev-Team details the recent RedSn0w release: “In conjunction with iOS5 beta4 being released to iOS developers, redsn0w 0.9.8b4 is now available for jailbreak app developers (point the b4 redsn0w at the b4 IPSW). Remember, it’s a tethered jailbreak right now so you’ll need to use redsn0w to boot into a jailbroken state at each power cycle.”
The Dev-Team also notes that it appears that by design, the OTA update that became available starting with iOS 5 beta4 will *not* be automatically applied to jailbroken devices. That’s a relief to those who don’t want to lose their jailbreak via OTA pushes. If you’re jailbroken, you’ll need to use the standard iTunes method to get to iOS 5 beta4.

Important

  • Just like the iOS 5 beta, the RedSn0w 0.9.8b4 release is meant for developers only to prepare their apps for the final iOS 5.
  • This RedSn0w jailbreak provides tethered iOS 5 jailbreak for now.
  • RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 will not hacktivate iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
  • RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 does not preserve iPhone baseband.

iOS 5 Beta 4 Blocks OTA Updates on Jailbroken iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

The latest iOS 5 beta 4 comes with Over-the-Air (OTA) iOS firmware updates for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. If you’re running iOS 5 beta 3, you can easily download and install iOS 5 beta 4 OTA without connecting to the iTunes. However, if you’re jailbroken, you wont be able to update iOS over-the-air.

ios 5 OTA
MuscleNerd of the Dev-Team has confirmed that OTA iOS updates won’t work on jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch due to an explicit check of /Applications.
MuscleNerd: “The 5.0b4 OTA update won’t work on JB devices due to an explicit check of /Applications..almost like a present from Apple”
ios 5 beta 4 OTA
Apparently Apple’s OTA iOS update software checks the /Applications folder to see if it is a real directory. However, the jailbreak users can still update to the latest iOS via iTunes Sync.
This isn’t Apple’s first attempt to prevent iOS 5 jailbreaking. We’ve already reported about the blob monster that Apple has in place in iOS 5 to stop users from downgrading firmware using SHSH blobs. Hopefully the Jailbreak community will come up with a workaround to enable over the air updates on jailbroken iDevices.

Apple has pushed the iOS 5 beta 4 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch to the developers via iOS dev center. The iOS 5 beta 4 brings OTA (Over-the-Air) iOS update and other minor tweaks. You can download iOS 5 beta 4 from the iOS Dev Center (requires dev account).

Unlike previous iOS 5 beta releases, Beta 4 lets all iPhone, ipad and iPod Touch users running iOS 5 beta 3 to update to iOS 5 beta 4 Over-the-Air. The beta 4 is also available via Apple’s Dev Center and carries a build number 9A5274d.
iOS 5 beta 4 can be installed using over the air software update from devices that have iOS 5 beta 3 installed. Over the air software update can be initiated by choosing General > Software Update in Settings.
Apple has also enabled documents in the cloud on iOS beta 4. Documents in the cloud feature of iCloud allows apps to store documents and data on Apple’s servers, enabling cross-platform (iOS-iOS, iOS-Mac) sync. (9to5mac)

The OTA iOS update is a delta update, meaning it only downloads what’s new NOT the full iOS IPSW. For iPhone 4, it weighs in at around 140 MB (full IPSW weighs 786 MB).

Download TinyUmbrella 5.00.06 – Supports iOS 4.3.4, 4.2.9 and iPad 2

Notcom has updated TinyUmbrella to version 5.00.06 which now supports iOS 4.3.4, iOS 4.2.9 on all iDevices including iPad 2. You can download TinyUmbrella 5.00.06 to save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.3.4, and iOS 4.2.9.

“I’ve updated TinyUmbrella for iPad 2 GSM/CDMA users allowing them to restore 4.3.x without the fear of the recovery loop. Assuming you have 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, or iOS 4.3.3 SHSHs and restore to one of those versions, TinyUmbrella will allow the restore to complete successfully.
It is important to note that I added this functionality so that iPad 2 users wouldn’t be left without a way to downgrade to 4.3-4.3.3. It is also important to note that this functionality will only remain for so long as Apple signs the current firmware (4.3.4). Use it while you can!
Special thanks to @oLunatiko for his help in testing this release!”
For those unfamiliar, TinyUmbrella lets you to save SHSH blobs for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV right from Apple Server and also via Cydia. SHSH blobs are required to downgrade device firmware to an older version. However, TinyUmbrella cannot save SHSH blobs of an older firmware, you can use iFaith for that purpose.

Windows 7 users are craving to get their handson on the OS X Lion’s amazing features especially the iPad launcher like Launchpad.
iPad Launcher of Windows 7 gives you the chance to try Launcher on Windows 7. It also allows you to lock the desktop icons without forcing users to log off. You can also customize the app icons, easily.

How to Get OSX Launchpad, iPad Launcher on Windows 7
Step 1. Download and unrar the file and run the exe.
Step 2. You now assign icons by clicking on desired icons. And later customize the icons.
Step 3. Configure locking (optional). This is of course a not very secure way since you can kill the app using task manager and retrieve your desktop.

Hack Macbook using Battery

Charlie Miller, the famous Apple security researcher has found another flaw with macbooks. The latest hack is very interesting as he had made it possible to hack  MacBook using the battery, alone.
Modern Laptop battery contains its own monitoring circuit which reports the status of the battery to the OS. The circuit is also responsible for preventing battery from overcharging, this comes handy when the laptop is switched off.
The scurity researcher has discovered that the batteries on Macbooks are shipped with the default password on the micro-controller. It can be inferred that if someone knows the default password, the firmware of the battery can be controlled to do many things from simply ruining the battery to install a malware which reinstalls whenever the OS boots. Since you gain access to the micro-controller that controls the battery, it becomes actually possible to overuse and overheat the battery to a limit where it can even catch fire.
Miller claims this hack can make the hacker achieve something that was unachievable before —  it’s possible to use them to do something really bad – Insert a new Hard drive, reinstall the software, flash the BIOS, and every time it would reattack and screw the user. And the worse part, it undetectable and impossible to  eradicate other than removing the battery.
Apple released a fix in 2009 to fix problems by creating two passwords used for the chip on the battery. By hacking that password, its possible to do anything like giving false reading to the charger and let it overcharge to cause fire, or to completely rewrite the firmware.
Hack is Not Easy
Luckily enough, miller hasn’t made all details public. He claims that to successfully exploit this vulnerability,  attacker has to analyze the 2009 software updates from Apple for the password. If he is able to retrieve the password, he will have to find a vulnerability in the interface between the OS and the firmware.
But these details would be made public at te yearly security conference, BlackHat. He will also be unveiling a tool to public that will change the password of the battery to a random string. Hope Apple releases a fix before that.

Enable iPhone Internet Tethering

iPhone officially, doesn’t support Internet Tethering on all models. But here is a process that allows you to use your iPhone as a Wireless modem to share its Internet connection with a computer via WiFi, USB cable or Bluetooth interface on iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS on anyFirmware: 3.0 or Firmware 3.1.2
The app that we are going to use is called MyWi
Main Features of MyWi v3.1.8:
  • Create WiFi Hotspot to connect mutiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone’’s internet connection
  • WEP Support.
  • Supports USB and Bluetooth Tethering as well
  • Uses less battery and much faster then PdaNet.
  • Shows  bandwith usage log.
Pre-requisites: Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken: Jailbreak, Unlock iPhone on 3.1.2
Step 1: Open Cydia, search for “MyWi” and install it. Install RockApp manually if it isn’t installed automatically with MyWi app.
Step 2: Now start RockApp and create a free Rock ID, sign-in and you should probably, now see an update to MyWi app. Restart your iPhone after the update.
Step 3: Open MyWi app and turn on the option for USB/Bluetooth tethering.
Enable Internet Tethering on iPhone 3.1.2
Step 4: Navigate to Settings->General->Network->Internet Tethering and turn on the toggle for Internet Tethering.
That’s it! Ask me any question should you run into problem in enabling Tethering on your iPhone running firmware 3.1.2.

iOS 5 vs. Android 2.3 Gingerbread vs. Windows Phone 7 Mango vs. Blackberry 7 OS

I'm planning on getting the Atrix this Sunday but I didn't know Android doesn't have tabbed browsing or Rich Text Emails. Anyone know if Honeycomb will or another udpate?

I also have to admit that it sounds like Windows Phone (Mango) is getting a lot better. I'm very interested in this down the road. I'm currently a BlackBerry user and feel the others are blazing past RIM as they sit around and do nothing. Which is why I'm looking to go to an Android device soon this weekend! But looking this chart over, it seems Android should consider some of these updates if they haven't already.
